Piracy in the Gulf of Aden
Two hundred miles off the coast of Somalia an oil tanker comes under fire from what had appeared to be a fishing vessel. The Captain attempts to outmanoeuvre the pirate ship before they are overrun but he knows this action can only delay an eventual hijacking.
The crew immediately activate the panic alarm on the tanker’s Track24 maritime tracking device. The shipping company’s Ops Room are made aware of the oil tanker’s panic status within 30 seconds, with audio and visual alerts appearing on the Track24 crisis management software , the C4i Platform. SMS and alert notifications are automatically forwarded to designated recipients informing them of the situation.
Whilst monitoring the tanker’s evasive actions on digital mapping, the Ops room is able to alert authorities of the lat/long and MGRS position of the vessel, which continues to update every 2 minutes. A navel ship in the vicinity is soon instructed to dispatch a helicopter to assist the tanker, which swiftly dissuades the pirates from continuing their attack.
At the push of a button, the crew of this vessel were able to safeguard their lives and save their company from possibly paying a multi-million dollar ransom.
